Unlike corporately-owned businesses that make decisions primarily to maximize profits, co-ops make decisions to maximize services to their owners and their community. Any business can be organized as a co-op. Grocery stores, credit unions, housing facilities, child daycares, and hospitals are all good examples of cooperatively run businesses. Adhering to democratic principles, co-ops provide jobs, stimulate the economy, and enhance the communities that they’re a part of. New Barons is proud to be the first and only cooperative brewery in the great state of Wisconsin.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT CO-OPS

MYTH #1: I have to be a farmer and live rurally to be a part of a co-op.

FACT: Although co-ops were founded by farmers in the 18th century, in today’s co-ops, everyone is welcome at New Barons! We believe a strong membership includes differing perspectives, ideas, cultures, upbringings, and, most importantly, beer preferences!

MYTH #2: Joining New Barons means I have to join the board (or work part-time at the co-op, or do something else I’m not really sure I want to do).

FACT: All you really have to do is enjoy good beer and good company. Sure, you can run for the board of directors or participate in co-op events if you like, but your level of participation is always entirely up to you.

MYTH #3: I have to pay an annual fee to be a member of the co-op.

FACT: To become a member of New Barons, you invest in a share of our co-op with a one-time fee. That’s it – for life! Your shares make you a co-owner of the New Barons Brewing Cooperative along with our other member-owners.
